I have a cisco router and comcast modem. does the local cable need to be connected to my desktop computer.?

I have a netgear wireless adapter for my desktop. I want to move my desktop somewhere else in my apartment but the router and modem have to stay in the corner because that is where the cable out from the wall is at. can i use my netgear router to use as wifi to recieve from the linkys router or does it need to be connected to the router.
