Refreezing meat...?

So I usually separate meat after I buy it into proportions.. but i forgot to separate the chicken.. is it ok if i put it in the refrigerator to defrost it enough so i can separate it... and then refreeze it... my mom says its not safe to do that.. but i read somewhere it is... but i forgot where i read it at and what kinds of foods...
