Does asking a guy if he likes you... ruin your friendship?

Subtly is the key word here and I am totally GLAD that you included it. Because it shouldn't necessarily mean that if you ask him that there should be any ruining of your friendship. People can get past things or even better than that, they can forgive. I think you ought to be able to ask him in the way you suggested and then find out for sure.
